Metabolic Health Month: 3rd Week Recap

Three weeks down, one to go!!!

Time may be going by fast, but your metabolic clock has s l o w e d  d o w n  – especially since you’ve been joining in on our Metabolic Health Month community challenges.

Studies show that even short-term spikes in blood sugar can have lasting impacts on your DNA (shocked smiley face.) [1] This means that every small step you take to control your blood glucose is actually increasing your quality of life and even your lifespan!

Metabolic health is longevity.

So, each time you pass on soda, or exercise after eating, or dig into a fiber-rich salad before a meal, you’re taking control of your genetics. Go you! This is what Metabolic Health Month is all about: placing the power of health back in your hands.

Here’s a recap of the third week in Metabolic Health Month:

  • sleep is the bedrock of metabolic health. Read here!
  • missing out on even just a few hours of sleep causes insulin resistance [2]
  • your daily blood sugar levels affect your sleep – so if you don’t want to be up in the night, keep those spikes down!
  • zucchini noodles are a great alternative to pasta if you want to reduce your blood sugar. See recipe here!
  • fat doesn’t make you gain weight any more than eating sugar turns you into cotton candy
  • the sugar industry-sponsored research that vilified fats while keeping sugar out of the spotlight in the public health arena [3]
  • dietary fat is extremely important for the production of hormones that are necessary for metabolic health
  • normal blood glucose is below100 mg/dl, but we should shoot for < 90
  • current tests (like A1c tests and fasting plasma glucose) only tell so much about our metabolic health.Science is showing that continuous glucose monitoring – CGMs – can be better for detecting blood sugar issues [4]
  • up to 73% of people without diabetes have indications of glucose tolerance
  • taking resistant starch before meals is an easy hack for increasing insulin sensitivity

And here’s what’s coming up this weekend:

  • A super delish – and sippable meal from our very own Dr. Vimal Ramjee
